Teaching Trauma Informed Yoga

Did you know that an estimated 70% of adults have experienced a traumatic event in their lives? There are many people who choose yoga as a way to support their healing. Many also first come to yoga for exercise but can be triggered by a past trauma because of their emotional or physical experience in the class.

The practice itself is deep and revealing, teaching trauma-informed yoga offers a safer space for self-inquiry, and empowers students to reclaim their bodies, while minimizing the risk of activating the fight, flight or freeze response.

The first Yama or ethical precept to yoga is Ahimsa, meaning 'to not harm', non-violence is the core foundation of all yoga. Explore ways to teach with compassion and sensitivity, while fostering an inclusive and accessible environment, to support connection and personal growth.

This eight-hour module will be part theory and part application:

  • understanding trauma and it’s impact on the body and mind
  •  how trauma influences the nervous system
  •  learn embodied mindfulness tools to support resiliency and recovery
  • how to teach trauma-informed yoga through language, consent, assists (visual, verbal and physical)
  • developing teacher qualities
  • practice teaching
